What would the universe be doing for 12 billion years before that???? If you double the universe's age, you would expect to find more black holes, less visible stars, and a population of mostly white dwarfs. Not to mention that this idea does not eliminate the Big Bang. The universe in a 3D space necessarily has to overcome an infinite gravitational well and thus the Big Bang.
